Description

Sciatica is a symptom that occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes pinched, inflamed, or irritated. This may cause a sharp, shooting, electric-like pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve travels from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down the leg. Sciatica most often occurs when a herniated disk or an overgrowth of bone in the lumbar spine (low back) puts pressure on part of the nerve. This causes inflammation, pain, and often numbness/tingling sensation in the affected leg. You may also experience sciatica symptoms from a tight muscle in your gluteals (buttock) called your "piriformis". When the sciatic nerve is compressed due to this muscle pushing on the nerve, this symptom is referred to as "pseudo-sciatica". Massage therapy can be an effective way to manage the pain and discomfort associated with sciatica flare-ups, as it can help relieve muscle tension, improve circulation of blood and oxygen, and promote healing in the affected area(s).
