Description

The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is the joint between the sacrum and the ilium (tailbone and pelvic bone) on either side of the lowest part of the low back. This joint helps with shock absorption between the upper and lower body. Pain and/or discomfort that resides at the dimple of the lower back and travels into the gluteals, upper thigh, and groin may be an indication of SIJ dysfunction. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction can be painful and interfere with your active lifestyle. You may also have difficulty standing up after sitting, using stairs, or rolling over in bed. Three types of SIJ dysfunction are: • Hypermobility – SIJ moves too much and is unstable. • Hypomobility – SIJ is stiff or shifts out of position. • Sacroiliitis – inflammation of the SIJ. Massage therapy can be an effective treatment for SIJ, as it can reduce pain and inflammation by targeting and releasing muscle tension and spasms around the affected joints, which in turn allows for better movement and alignment of the joints.
