Text Neck

Description

Text neck (Postural Kyphosis) can develop from constantly looking down at a screen (via mobile devices/computer screens). This forward posture increases the weight of the head on the vertebrae of the cervical spine (neck) and upper thoracic spine (upper back). Text neck is usually a result of slouching or poor posture that stretches the ligaments and muscles holding the vertebrae (spinal bones) in place. That stretching pulls the vertebrae out of their normal position, resulting in a rounded upper back and shoulders (pitched-forward posture). Holding this unnatural forward posture results in overstretched, hypertonic, fatigued muscles in the posterior neck and upper back. Massage therapy can be helpful for individuals with text neck by providing relief through increasing body awareness, relieving pain, decreasing stiffness, and reducing inflammation in overused muscles and ligaments.
